A passport is one of the most important documents a nation’s ordinary citizen can possess. It isn’t necessary if you never leave your country, but you can’t cross its borders without it, either. And the only way to get one of these in the U. S. is through the government’s United States passport services.
A passport identifies the person bearing it as a citizen or national of a particular country. It is used to request permission from governments in foreign lands to be able to travel in said lands or it is used to ask permission to be able to temporarily reside in these lands. If given, it also allows access to every kind of lawful and local aid or protection. It also allows the bearer certain amounts of access to consular services and/or assistance when abroad. It also allows for re-entry into one’s native country.
This Services agency also issues passports to any of its people wishing to travel abroad. As it is proof of citizenship, the agency sanctions the integrity of the passport. A wide variety of services, resources, and support exists through this agency. It can even assist you in times of trouble or dispute, though it is not a law agency.
There are fifteen (15) Regional Passport Agencies located throughout the country. Some of these are found in the western half of the United States, such as in Los Angeles, Denver, Seattle, Tuscon, Dallas, Chicago, and Miami. There are several more centrally located in Houston, Minneapolis, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Detroit. The remainder are in northeastern cities such as Boston, Philadelphia, New York, and Hartford, CT. Of course, there is a passport agency in Washington, D. C., but it is a separately categorized Special Issuance Agency. Headquarters are also found here in the nation’s capital.
There are also three National Processing Facilities under the agency’s responsibilities. These three facilities assist in issuing passports to Americans abroad at U. S. embassies and consulates. Here in the U. S., a network of almost 10,000 government offices exists. They have been assigned by services to accept passport applications, but they are not allowed to issue any passports to anyone.
The National Passport Information Center is the final big agency under the Services. The National Passport Information Center takes care of all questions related to your passport. Appointments can be made via the National Passport Information Center. Travel emergencies are dealt with here. You monitor online the status of a passport application and there’s a toll-free hotline, staffed by live customer service reps, who answer your questions and provide needed assistance.
Completing the vast work the Services agency takes care of, you can also renew your passport, pay any fees, or apply and receive one on behalf of a minor. You can also have your application expedited, or request and pay for overnight delivery. You can also correct any errors to data or add pages to your passport. You can even get your name changed, should you want or need to.
