There’s a lot of preparation and planning involved when you’re camping with kids and you need a lot of patience too. It can also be a little bit more tiring and stressful than your usual camping trip with your wife.
Aside from the thorough preparation, consideration of the kids’ needs take top priority, leaving little or no room for you and spouse’s. Now while it sounds bad, I can assure you that it’s well worth it and the kids will love you for it.
There are a lot of things you can do on a camping trip with the kids and it’s simply a rewarding experience. Because you love these little creatures so much, you don’t mind putting that extra effort to your camping trips because you know it won’t be memorable without them anyway.
Here are some tips you can start out for a smooth camping trip:
- A good way to help you find out what the kids would need on a camping trip is to ask the kids. Allow them to pack their own stuff but make sure you supervise them.
Kids would do anything to prove something including being responsible so treat them like responsible adults by making them see the value of their opinions.
- You don’t need an expensive child sleeping bag. A cheap children’s sleeping bag does the job well enough.
- Try backyard camping if it’s your kids’ first camping trip so they know what to expect and they won’t get homesick.
- Teach your kids to pitch their own tents and other simple and safe tasks so that they can help out.
- To prevent unwanted incidents, set up some safety rules like not wandering too far away from camp and not eating wild berries.
- Gathering round the campfire at night and singing and story telling is a lot of fun.
- Take the kids on day hikes and show them the wonders of nature.
- Don’t forget to teach them how to keep themselves safe at the camp. No playing with fire and no swimming in the lake alone are just some of the many rules they have to be familiar about.
- Creating games out of camping chores will get the kids interested in doing them
- Kids love to play with binocular so take them birdwatching.
- Insect repellent and sunscreen should be in your pack.
- Flashlights and glow sticks are nice companions during the night when your kids’ anxiety grows as night time falls.
- Among the things you can do at night is star gazing.
- Don’t forget to bring the very important first aid kit for small accidents or mishaps.
- Have some night snacks. Not inside the tent of course. Before you go to sleep, a few chats and chips will surely be a great finale to a great day.
- Take some camping games for the kids.
- Be sure that you have a camera to capture the unforgetable experience.
Camping is one the sure ways you can spend quality time with your kids. It may take more effort on your part but it’s well worth it.
